Looking for a special trip the whole family will enjoy and that will help you create memories that will last a lifetime? Logan, Utah is the largest town in the gorgeous Cache Valley, an agricultural valley named for the fur stashes made by the beaver trappers in the 1800s.

But what are the best activities both grown-ups and kids will enjoy? If you are planning for a fun-filled family weekend, here are my top suggestions:

Wind Caves Hiking Trail

The Wind Caves, also known as the Witch's Castle, is a popular hiking trail on the north side of Logan Canyon, one of America’s last unspoiled places. The trail leads to a triple arch and natural cave carved in the dramatic limestone cliffs.

The Wind Caves are a beloved attraction in the area. Although the hike has moderate difficulty levels and is fairly steep, the whole family can enjoy it. Just be patient and take as many stops as you need. The hike can take up to 2-3 hours, but the magnificent views of the canyon, the beautiful wildflowers along the way and the huge limestone cliffs of the China Wall formation are well worth it.

The trail is well marked and easy to follow. Bring water and snacks. Hiking in the morning may be more enjoyable, because the weather is cooler.

Take the Cache Valley Signature Products Tour

Hungry already? What better way to spoil the taste buds of the whole family than a self-guided Cache Valley Signature Products Tour?

Stop by Gossner Foods for cheese samples and to watch it being made. Then drop by Lower Foods for sliced sandwich meats including French dip, prime rib, barbecue beef, and pastrami. And get your crackers and cookies from Pepperidge Farm and let the fun begin.

I’ve always dreamed of going on a sugar binge and Logan is the perfect place to do just that.

The Bluebird Candy Company has been whipping up mouthwatering chocolates since 1914, including O’Aggie bars (named after Utah State University’s mascot).

Tempt your taste buds with 30 flavors of ice cream at Aggie Ice Cream and True Blue Cheese.

Still not quite satisfied? Stop by Casper's Ice Cream for their signature giant vanilla Fat Boy square-shaped ice cream sandwich invented all the way back in 1925.

Maybe want the low-calorie version? Visit Mt. Naomi Farms where you can pick your own berries, and get down to earth. The kids will love it, trust me!

Visit the American West Heritage Center

Step back in time and experience the true Old West at this interactive outdoor museum of folk life back in the 19th century.

The American West Heritage Center is fun no matter your age. From wagon rides to a huge corn maze in the fall, to rag doll making, hatchet throwing, wool spinning, cow milking, soap making, and trap setting, you will enjoy hours upon hours of fun.

Meet the farmers, mountain men, and pioneers dressed in period costume and take photos of the small herd of buffalo.

Don’t miss the Baby Animal Days in April! They have a wide range of baby animals for you to pet and see from chickens to bear cubs.

Family friendly festivals

Festivals are a great way to connect with all members of your family and take a multigenerational trip.

Stop by Logan’s Saturday Gardener’s Market from May to October or the free Summerfest Arts Faire in June.

The Cache Storytelling Festival will tickle your imagination.

On the 4th of July, you can celebrate with one of the largest firework shows in the West.

And harvest festivals and corn mazes are all the rage in fall.

Get up close and personal with the elk at Hardware Ranch

This is great fun for anyone aged 2 to 92. From December to February, the elk come down from higher elevations and you can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride through the snow-clad meadow, and right through the herd of elk. Doesn’t this sound like it’s inspired by a fairytale?

Hardware Ranch is about 30 miles from Logan, but the trip is relaxing, educational, and fun for the whole family. Enjoy the spectacular views, warm up with a mug of delicious hot cocoa, listen to the tinkling of sleigh bells and the steady rhythm of plodding hooves, and take a deep breath. The crisp air will do both your lungs and your mind good.

On a cold day, you can spot up to 600 beautiful elk from baby elk just a few months old to huge bull elk. And the most amazing thing is that many times they will be literally just a few feet away. Close enough to take your 1k-likes selfie with an elk!

Don’t forget to bring warm clothes, snacks and water!
